Oh to be young again and filled with hope and idealistic notions about how the world should/could be and how to change it. We need that in our lives. Otherwise we wouldn’t evolve as a species. However, the longer we live the more we realize that “Bad things happen to Good People” (Harold Kushner). Scott Peck begins his book “The Road Less Travelled” with the statement “Life is hard”. And it’s not just for some people. It’s for everyone. As we age we learn that you can’t protect yourself from life happening and eventually you will fit into one or more of the ‘bad stats’ categories. This is an important fact to face. Facing this fact helps to connect you to the humanity of other people in the world that have had to face hard things; that they have found the resilience to get through their struggles and that you can too. Bringing an attitude of resilience and a sense of connection to your pain helps with almost any issue you may have to persevere through. I love the clip I’ve attached of Sheryl Sandberg’s letter who decided to ‘kick the shit out of Option B’ when her husband died.
