Pay It Forward

9/18/2015

So at least once a week I get people contacting me to thank me for continuing to do these blog posts.  You’re welcome.  It’s nice to hear that they’re helpful and I appreciate the feedback.  My goal is to maintain the connection and support without you having to pay to see me.  ; )  Hearing from you lets me know that I’ve met my goal.  Sometimes all people need is a reminder or a little ‘tweaking’….and they’re able to be back in the moment and in charge of their day.  So today I’m asking you to ‘pay it forward’.  If there is someone in your life that you think could benefit from one of my blog posts or metaphors then…..pay it forward.  They don’t have to sign up and it won’t cost them anything.  They don’t even have to risk seeing a therapist!!!  Shame is the insidious culprit that is slowly causing an epidemic of mental illness in our society.  Many people assume that my job as a therapist fits into a traditional medical model. From that assumption people would conclude that I analyze ‘my’ ‘patients’ symptoms, judging them as ‘sick’ and then  ‘my job’ is to judge them, figure out what is ‘wrong’ with them and ‘fix’ them.  Now any of you that have come to see me know that I don’t do that.  I listen carefully to what YOU think is wrong with your life.  Then together we work on helping you to see what is blocking you from being in control yourself and the choices that are available to you. My job is to be an ‘emotional midwife’ while people are processing their issues and making changes to their life.  My job is to help people by providing: a safe non-judgemental environment; useful information; resources; observation and reflection when behaviours or thoughts contradict the intended goal; skills and tools to aid being more in control of their lives; and advocacy and a fierce ally while they are making changes at a deep personal level.   However, if people are feeling shame and thinking I am going to judge them then they’ll never come for therapy and find that out!!!  So if you think this blog post would help enlighten them to the process then ……pass it along!  If you think that there is no way on earth that they would ever cross the door of a therapist’s office….then maybe there is a blog post that I have written at some point that would support them.  As a society if we want to turn this epidemic of mental illness around then we need to give people different ways to think about themselves and tools to make those changes.  If my blog posts could help…… then please……pay it forward!!!
