So everyone knows exercise is good for you. There's nothing new in knowing that and sometimes when we hear things ALL THE TIME then it becomes like Charlie Brown's teacher "Whaaa, Whaaa"! But I think you'd be surprised to know just HOW many ways it helps you when you move your body. The obvious ones that we hear about often are that doing more than 30 mins of cardio for up to 3 x / week helps with cardiovascular health. And that exercise helps if you are trying to control weight gain. And....well....it helps you sleep if that is an issue for you too. Well.....AND according to the Alzheimer's Association, physical activity keeps blood flowing and boosts oxygen consumption, both of which help your brain function better. AND....the Royal College of Psychiatrists states that for mild depression, physical activity can be as good as antidepressants or psychological treatments like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) . So, while it can certainly be harder to get active when you are depressed, being active lifts your mood and gives you a sense of being in control and in touch with other people. So.....because I have to take care of my body and mental health too, I am joining my colleagues at Sage Naturopathic Clinic for the Running in Colour run on May 27th. And I'm inviting anyone who wants to join me to email me and let me know that you'll be joining me. I'm particularly pleased that this year the proceeds will go to the Special Olympics so we'll see if we can get Kezia to join us for the last 1/2 km! Let's all take care of ourselves and have fun running together!
